Lancaster1Notes: Based on the island of Malta, he was on his 49th operational night raid over mainland Italy.

Flying in formation the aircraft above him was hit by flack and collided on descent with his aircraft.

He was trapped in his gun turret and unable to get out. The crew tried to release him but were unable to help and all except him bailed out safely by parachute.
